When my students come to art class, we ALWAYS start our lessons with a book. By starting lessons with a book, students are able to visualize something that has been created by an artist/illustrator and understand topics that we are currently learning in art class through literacy. For example; if I am teaching the students about shapes, we can easily read the book "Color Zoo" together as a class and do an art lesson where we create our own animals out of cut shapes. New books will give my students a diverse array of reading opportunities when they finish a project early. If students do not want to read, they will now be able to grab a how-to-draw book and learn to draw anything their heart desires. These books will help my students learn about new art topics and techniques while they read! Currently, I only have one how-to-draw book and my books available for students to read are old and torn. Most of the books I read to students are either borrowed from another teacher or read completely online. The students and I both agree it is time to restock the library of books we have in the art room. The new books will give students many options to choose from. Since our school has an arts infused curriculum, this order of books will help infuse reading within my art room. My students love to read after finishing an art project and these new books will definitely spark their interest more.
