As we learn more about trauma-informed education and the importance of teaching students how to self-regulate, it is clear that what's happening at home really affects what happens at school. As a 13-year middle school teacher, I have seen firsthand that many times, students need a "brain break" and place to just chill out on those bad days. My goal is to create a more trauma-informed classroom, and to give my students resources and ways to calm down. Additionally, I am a queer educator and am going to be the faculty advisor of the Rainbow Club, and statistics show that LGBT students often experience more bullying than others. I want to make sure kids regard my room as a safe place to hang out, take a break, and feel safe. These materials will help me give my students the space to breathe and manage their stress. The bookshelf will help me organize the books currently stored there and create room for this Zen Zone.
