The students I work with are second language learners. Most of their parents do not speak English. These children are expected to take a state test in reading on a third grade level. However, not one of these students are reading on grade level nor do they have their parent's support at home to help them with their reading at home. They do not have much support at home in their academics. The students in my class this year all want to learn and achieve. However, the reading it too difficult for them and the work is challenging because they are not able to understand the readings on this grade level. Reading affects results in other academic areas. Although my school does provide opportunities to help parents work with their children to succeed, not many take advantage of opportunities given.
