Many of my students are English Language Learners and/or have various learning disabilities. By giving my students hands on experiences using thermometers, measuring tapes and magnetic marbles, my students can connect their learning to real life. Using the thermometers will allow my students to make connections between the movement of heat between various objects in our Energy unit. In our Matter unit, students can see how temperature is a physical characteristic of different substances. Determining the dew point and when condensation occurs will allow students to make connections in our Weather unit. Too frequently students have hands on experience with only a straight edge ruler. By using a measuring tape, students will be able to make connections between math and science of three dimensional objects. As students handle the magnetic marbles, they will be able to visualize how elements are able to create compounds and mixtures.
