My students love to read, however, due to the constraints of our curriculum, we have not been able to read a full novel as a class yet. For many, their favorite part of the day is Independent Reading time. I want to build on my students’ love of reading by ending the school year with a class novel study. I have chosen the #1 New York Times best-selling graphic novel “Smile” by Raina Telgemeier for our class study. This novel addresses themes such as puberty, fitting in and self esteem, topics and challenges that all of my students can relate to, especially as they start middle school in the fall. In addition, the graphic novel format makes the book accessible to the wide range of readers in my classroom. Graphic novels have been found to promote literacy and serve as a powerful motivator in getting kids to read more. Through reading and studying this novel, my students will be able to understand how authors use words and pictures to give us a deeper understanding of a story, and how authors create powerful characters we can relate to as readers.
