This book will help to incorporate the aspects of STEM by the use of a novel. I plan on bringing in NASA based lessons to connect what we are reading to hands on experiences. The large project for this unit will be a hydroponic system that the students will build and grow their own crops for a class party at the conclusion of the novel. My students love completing STEM projects. This novel has real world connections that I plan to tie in as well. Including but not limited to current NASA missions and current NASA Mars research. Many of my students do not enjoy reading but they enjoy coming to my class. I hope to show these reluctant readers a new genre of novels that the school library does not feature.
