As we study both historical and modern forms of oppression, it can sometimes be challenging for students to understand perspectives outside of their own worldview. By providing a diverse classroom library, students will not only be able to have "mirrors" to see their own identities reflected back on them, but also "windows" into the experiences of teenagers from other identities. Giving students access to diverse characters and stories will give them tools to help support their understanding and knowledge of people who come from various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. We will be able to use these books as discussion starters for contemporary issues such as racism, injustice, and inequality. Both in-person and virtual students will have the opportunity to check out books that interest them and provide windows and mirrors. Throughout the semester, students will begin to be able to make connections between their own experiences, the storylines in our classroom library books, and the lives of people all around them. Exposure to diverse stories will help these young people develop more empathy and become active citizens who make our country and world a better place for all of us.
