The SPIRE Sounds Sensible reading program is a research based, direct instruction reading curriculum designed to specifically help struggling, below-grade level readers. The students I work with each day are performing mostly on a Kindergarten reading level. The SPIRE program also provides manipulatives, such as magnet boards, to give my students a more visual, hands-on approach to reading instruction. Sounds Sensible is a program designed specifically to provide the building blocks necessary for reading instruction to prevent the failure of reading before it begins. Sounds Sensible is also a tool to use to help students in upper grades backtrack and learn the foundational skills necessary to become astounding readers in the future.
