Good books can make or break an ELA classroom. As a teacher, I like to take pride in my use of novel studies in order to best teach the standards while engaging my students. Serafina and the Black Cloak provides students with a mystery that takes place in the Biltmore House. This book appeals to many types of readers while also emphasizing some of the history of our own state, North Carolina. I think it is so valuable for students to learn about their state and how books can relate to that topic. With this novel set, all students will be able to take part in a learning experience greater than themselves. After teaching this novel students can then go on to read the rest of the series. Once students are fascinated with the topic and story line, they are more likely continue reading to find out what happens next. These books will help my students grow in their comprehension abilities and increase their appreciation for a good text.
