The Play's the Thing is a hybrid between daily class instruction and an enrichment opportunity. My school's most complex learners will read and explore Shakespeare and his plays- in particular, his comedy As You Like It- in my classroom as part of their daily literacy instruction. Once a week, they will join with a group of self-selected general education/inclusion students to share their learning, reading and enjoyment of the literature.
This shared experience, in which each group will have the opportunity- through your generosity- to read and access the text in different ways, will increase my students' sense of belonging as it increases all of the students' sense of accomplishment as they tackle above grade level material and see just how accessible- and funny- the Bard can be. The experience will culminate in a trip (tickets fully funded through a separate grant) to see a production of As You Like It at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre in the spring of 2022.
