The learning environment is an integral part of the whole educational experience. My classroom is self-contained, meaning the majority of my students are in the same room for most of their day. Being 4th graders, my students crave an environment in which they can fully interact and engage with their peers. My goal for this flexible seating project is to create a space which is personalized to my students’ needs, where they feel they have ownership of their learning and where they feel comfortable to learn best! As modern learners, a fully immersed flexible seating environment will greatly impact their abilities to utilize the classroom in the unique ways they need to be successful. The products I have selected for this project will enhance my students’ learning experiences by providing them with a wide variety of seating options to responsibly choose from. I have included counter-height stools for students who prefer working at high table tops, wobble stools for students who need to fidget or move in order to concentrate, floor cushions for students who work best sitting cross-legged on the floor, file crates to make comfortable, cushioned seats and book shelves to store students’ belongings (since we are, hopefully, getting rid of our traditional desks)! Flexible seating is about more than just including an assortment of different, fun seats for students. It’s about utilizing student voice, creating a sense of ownership, strengthening collaborative learning, and prioritizing students’ needs regarding the environment in which they learn. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping our classroom grow!
