Many students begin ELA 9 believing either that books are boring or that they are bad readers. So the class is designed to introduce students to texts that excite, challenge, and reflect them as well as provide them various methods to engage with the reading. Students have been introduced to short stories, poems, speeches, and a young adult novel that incorporate multiculturalism and discuss relevant issues within their communities and larger society. Students eagerly read texts as a class and discuss their perspective in their literature circles.
The independent reading unit is designed to allow students to engage with texts that more closely align with their personal interests while also allowing them to engage with their peers as they make connections to the universal themes and larger human experience. For this unit I'm requesting copies of In the Time of the Butterflies, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Just Mercy.
Students will choose one of these novels to read and participate in literature circles to discuss their text. If we reach our goal, every student will receive a novel to take home to read and annotate instead of only being able to read in class. These donations are extremely beneficial as most students cannot afford to buy their own novel and lack the transportation to reach the local library.
It is so important for students to read and ENJOY what they are reading. These books reflect the interests students have expressed and they will allow students to understand larger ideas through a lens of their choosing. Students will be able to not only find the purpose behind the text, but they will also use the texts as a means to find their own voices and craft their own powerful narratives.
