I am trying to create a flexible seating arrangement in my Social Studies classroom. Since I am teaching juniors and seniors, I would like to give them a different learning experience; something that is for an older crowd and similar to study/meeting environments they would experience in college. I would also like to give them the opportunity to learn in a different way. Making students sit in desk that are crowded into a small classroom, can sometimes disengage students before the lesson begins. Student feel boxed in or trapped. Studies show that learning environments where students feel comfortable and safe increases academic achievement. Flexible seating would be the perfect experience to keep them engaged and also show them that I acknowledge the fact that they are on their way into the adult world. I want to do more than teach them Social Studies. I want to help prepare them for their next phase in life.
