I am hoping to create a manga collection for students as part of my classroom library. Many of our students struggle with literacy -- and have trouble finding books that are both interesting to them, and at their reading level. While chatting with my students about their reading preferences, I found that many are extremely interested in reading manga and watching anime. I am hoping to build a collection of manga so that students can actually choose and read books they love during Independent Reading. I think that manga and graphic novels are wonderful tools for building literacy because the illustrations combined with short texts aid students' comprehension. Time spent reading something they love will help increase students' literacy skills. I hope these books will encourage a love for reading -- especially for students who feel frustrated because of their reading levels. Both the familiar manga titles, as well as the illustrations will help students better understand what they are reading, and encourage them to read even more!
