Writing is such an important skill for children to be exposed to at an early age. It goes hand in hand with reading. With early writing exposure, children can work on their spelling, handwriting, letter sounds and start communicating their ideas onto paper. Writing gives children a voice, lets them be expressive through words and pictures. My students love being able to express their thoughts through writings and drawings. For our writer's workshop each week, my students are given a meaningful writing prompt for them to write about. We revisit their writing piece each day to add details and labels to their drawings and then writing sentences to tell about their drawings. My students love writer's workshop and their favorite part is sharing their writing piece with their peers. They love seeing and knowing that they are able to write and also read what they have written. With the materials requested, my students will be using the writing journals to illustrate and write. Right now, all their writing piece are kept together in a file folder; instead, by having the journals, it would be great motivation for them to see all of their writing pieces in one place and also to see how much their writing has blossom. Each student will also have their own writing box to keep all their writing and drawing materials in so that they can easily have access to them. They no longer would have to wait for another student to finish using a certain color or an eraser because each of them will have their own writer's box. This will also teach my students to work on being accountable for their own writing utensils. Being accountable is a big skill that we value and are constantly working on in the classroom.
