I selected two guided reading collections of books that are targeted for grade four readers and advanced grade four readers. My middle school students are two to four grade levels below in their reading skills. We lack properly leveled free reading materials for students to practice with. Reading books that are too difficult increases frustration. Having a variety of books to read at one's independent level is a fundamental step in building reading proficiency. Books that are at a student's independent reading level build vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Our school library features books for readers from levels S-Z. My students' reading levels range from O-R. The two collections of books I have chosen feature books at my students' reading levels.
