I have been gathering my small groups either on the floor in my meeting area or at a very tiny conference table. This is not optimal, as you can imagine. Having students sit and work on the floor does not allow them to focus the way that they should. A kidney-shaped table would be a dream for my small-group instruction. The benefit of this type of table is that the teacher is within an arm's reach of each student. Children are more focused when they are in close proximity of the teacher, and when children are focused, they are able to make greater strides in gaining the reading skills in which they are lacking. When children feel closely connected to the teacher and to one another, they are more apt to stay engaged in the work at hand. Working at this group table will allow the teacher to quickly scan each student's work and to provide immediate instruction.
