As a history teacher, I want my students to experience the world as hands-on as possible. Students have to understand what drove early people to innovate and create as well as what skills they will need in the future. In order to offer them these skills, students will be starting in class businesses! These young entrepreneurs will use raw materials to create handmade products that they will then “”sell” to each other using classroom currency. This simulation will have the students mimic a real small business by budgeting the cost of materials, time and labor, and advertising while trying to sell their materials for a profit. They will all be mini small business owners. This activity offers something for all business types. If they are artistic then they can create wall art using the heavy duty scratch art paper and the wooden beveled carving utensils. A reasearcher can turn a set of blank sheets of reinforced paper and some markers into a colorful set of science Cornell Notes pages, a must have for any student in AVID. If they are crafty, they can design keychains and jewelry with the lacing cards. The card stock and glitter and markers could combine with the envelopes that we have had donated to make beautiful handmade cards for any occasion. This simulation will introduce them to real life experiences that will prepare them for their futures and introduce the basics of econimcs. One of my biggest challenges is that many of my students can not afford to buy the raws materials needed to create their handmade products. These are hard working students who would benefit greatly from the experience of running their own business, but the cost of materials is prohibitive. Please, help me make this experience a reality for my students!
