These materials will assist in transforming the physical space in my classroom to a cozy inviting place for students to read independently or enjoy a great book with a classroom friend. Before my students went home for distance learning as a result of the pandemic last school year, they were beginning to blossom into great readers who ENJOY reading. During their Independent Reading time, the students were encouraged to select a book or magazine that is of interest to them and "JUST READ"! The students were allowed to move to anywhere in the room that they felt comfortable reading. I noticed students begin to create unique, creative spaces to read. One student would make a fort with her coat to create some privacy while she read. Other students moved to the floor under their desks. This inspired me to create a "Cozy Reading Cafe" where students can have more comfortable places to read.
My goal is to create an enjoyable daily reading experiences for students and draw in my reluctant readers. I want my student to feel safe to get lost in a good book without the distraction of a hard classroom chair. As a Reading Specialist, I want to make sure that all my students have an opportunity to experience the magical joys of reading an interesting book or book series. I'm making it a priority to help ignite that passion for reading in each student. The rug purchased will be placed in front of the bookshelves in "The Reading Cafe" as an optional place for students to sit. Encouraging reading posters and motivational phrases will be added around the cafe. The comfortable chairs purchased will be used as a softer seating choice for my young readers.
