One of the biggest struggles for my students is that their reading levels and literacy skills are below grade level. The state of Ohio mandates a graduation mastery test in biology, which is required for every student. Those tests use grade-level language. By incorporating fiction and non-fiction texts collaboratively in the classroom, students can build content knowledge, literacy skills, and higher order processing skills. I've chosen texts that are popular and relevant. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks discusses genetics, cell culture, and ethics. My students are a diverse group - Henrietta Lacks was a minority woman whose cells were used without her permission and have become a staple in laboratories across the world. By engaging the students in these various texts, we can facilitate discussion, learn and engage in the content material, and create hands-on projects which focus on both content and literacy! Not only will these skills help them on the state tests, but in careers and continued education. My hope is that these texts also inspire curiosity they didn't know they had!
