We learn and think about who we are through a year-long ethnic studies program in our middle school exploring topics around social justice, identity development, the history of race, environmental racism, and critical race theory. We approach our study of history through the lens of personal narrative and through the eyes of those who are often left out of the stories we tell our children in school through standard textbooks. However, finding alternative texts is difficult and expensive. The goal of this project is to introduce our students, the vast majority of whom are urban kids of color, to texts that are written by authors who look like them and who write about topics they can connect to. This not only accomplishes our curricular goals but also affirms the validity our students' own narratives.
