In an age of extreme screen use in early childhood, children's experience with real, imagination-enhancing play is decreasing. Kindergarten is quickly becoming more and more academic and therefore I feel it is extremely important to provide them with as many opportunities to act out their life experiences through play as possible.
It is well known that kindergarteners learn best through play and hands-on experiences, so it is crucial that my classroom has the necessary tools and objects to provide these opportunities. Dramatic play is incredible for children. It allows them to recreate and process events in their lives. Dramatic play can also be used to enhance a social studies curriculum. Additionally, building materials such as Magnatiles can teach children problem-solving skills and enhance knowledge of shapes and geometry.
Through this project, I am also asking for Chromebooks, a tool that would positively impact my students' ability to gain reading skills. Students will be able to access books digitally that we don't have in our classroom libraries, as well as use audiobooks. Having a listening center would be a wonderful addition to the reading life of my students.
