Our school has started putting a stronger emphasis on the social and emotional needs of our students. As a staff, we are educating ourselves to better support the students and their needs. Many of our students have powerful emotions in the classroom that result in behavior that is difficult to manage. To prevent this, we are using The Zones of Regulation to teach students about self-management. Students learn about the different feelings and recognize when they are in specific "zones" that are labeled with the colors blue, red, yellow, and green. To better guide students in this self-regulation, we can use picture books. These books will show them characters in situations similar to ones they experience and feelings with which they can connect. We have selected books to go into the color-coded tubs corresponding to each zone, and one tub will contain books for ongoing teaching about all of the zones. By reading books and discussing the characters, students will learn about which circumstances might put them in the red zone (angry, out of control, terrified), and they will read about and practice different strategies to put them back in the green zone (happy, focused, ready to learn). As teachers are learning how to best implement this program in the classroom, they can access the book tubs to support their teaching and target certain zones when their students need it.
