In my time as a teacher, one thing that I have noticed is that kids do best when given choices. While some choices are not always possible (using the Sharpie to color your hair black is *not* a choice you should make!), allowing students to pick out where they sit while completing their work has worked well for my students. They are instructed on what their choices are, expectations for each option, and then set off to whichever seating choice makes them feel most comfortable. Sometimes flexible seating looks like a group of students on their stomachs in the middle of the room working together while another group of students sits underneath their desks on pillows. Sometimes students choose to sit at their desk but only add a small pillow to their chair. The choice is theirs, so long as they are able to make a smart choice and focus with their decision. It gives them choice and provides a change of scenery. It also is great for my kiddos with ADHD who constantly need to be moving!
