In an age where students are expected to prepare and do well on standardized tests, a classroom schedule is defined by teaching to the test. I want to create opportunities where my students can partake in a culturally relevant and responsive curriculum that is thematically defined. Through these themes, I desire to enhance learning by incorporating art activities that extend the learning into visual and performing arts. As a first-year, Teach For America teacher, I am in the beginning stages of setting up my classroom and hope to have the students' artifacts to decorate the classroom and create an inclusive, warm environment where they can feel safe and allow for learning to take place.
