In high school, our students read plenty of Shakespeare tragedies, but we often run out of time to read his highly enjoyable comedies. In the fall, we read Macbeth and we had great success with a few days of activities that I got from the Folger Shakespeare Library at a conference. Since our students read lots of tragedies, I want them to read, perform, and enjoy a Shakespeare comedy! Many of my students are struggling readers, but I know they can respond to Shakespeare's poetry-songs! Having their own copies of the book will help them to be able to make their own notes and walk around with a small book rather than a giant textbook. They can work together as a class or in smaller groups. Of course, we also need to incorporate vocabulary and grammar and the all-important writing. Hopefully, they will end the year with an increased appreciation of Shakespeare, increased language, reading, and writing skills, and the sheer enjoyment of reading, speaking, and acting out stories, songs, and words that are universal to humans and, especially, teenagers!
