The students of our school are great kids, but not all of them feel connected to their teachers, each other, or the broader community of our school. The ones who struggle in school the most are often disconnected, and look at school as a drudge. By giving them something nonacademic that brings them together, we aim to build community, acceptance, and teamwork in our boys. Barbecuing is a rite of passage, a hobby, and a tool that can be used to bring people together. Our barbecue training event for boys will bring both staff and students together for something outside of classwork that instills pride, camaraderie, and teamwork. The result will be that our students will feel a stronger connection to each other, their teachers, and their community, which will help them to be more invested into the education they receive with us.
