I chose to teach the novel Ghost Boys to my eighth graders this year. This novel specifically addresses the mistreatment of African Americans by police officers. The main character in this novel, Jerome, is shot and killed in the first chapter, and then from the "other side," observes how racism has directly affected people in his life. Because my students are exclusively young men and women of color, it is imperative that they read literature which includes people who look like them. I am so excited to share a novel with my students that I know will be culturally engaging.
