The students in our program have been identified as having processing needs. The processing needs impact their ability to focus and sustain vocational tasks for extended periods. We have developed a sensory classroom and have scheduled sensory breaks for our students but in order to give them the “sensory diet” that they need to be able to be more successfully engaged in their learning we are in need of weighted vests and weighted lap pads.
The Jelly bean twist and saucer switches will allow our students, specifically our physically challenged students to independently activate sensory devices in their environment. What appears as simple as a button, will open up worlds of access and independence to our students and their ability to access and identify their sensory output needs.
Having a fully functioning sensory room will provide our students with a scheduled sensory break that will give them relaxation and enjoyment by eliminating distraction, increasing creative sensory input, and facilitate communication and mobility for all of our students who have a wide range pf disabilities. This will also lead to greater independence and self-awareness that they will be able to sustain into a post-secondary setting.
