I read aloud picture books regularly with my reading groups for a wide variety of purposes - to model reading skills, to expose my students to challenging vocabulary, and to bond in a shared reading experience. Reading aloud is one of my very favorite parts of my work, as it is a true pleasure and joy to experience stories alongside my young learners. Students get to hear fluent reading, talk about their thinking with other students, and learn about cultures and people from around the world. I would like all of my students to see themselves represented in the books that I read to them. When students see characters that look, live, and sound like them in books, they are more invested in the stories and in reading as a whole. Reading is much more meaningful when the reader can relate to a character or a storyline. Getting my students personally invested in reading is a constant goal of mine; when students invest in the power of literacy, all of their dreams can be realized and the doors to their futures are open.
