My students have many learning and social/emotional needs. I am always trying to provide engaging ways to teach the core academics with students that struggle primarily with behavior /social skills which is why I am asking for support to provide a refrigerator to expand my culinary program and a puppet theatre with flannel board & puppets to teach and reinforce social skills through role play. My culinary arts program reinforces basic communication and social skills such as turn taking, listening, hearing a different perspective, working in a group and delayed gratification. When my students are available for learning, they are exposed to mathematical language such as; fractions, elapsed time, and problem solving. My reluctant readers are also taking a greater interest in reading recipes because some of the language is predictable and my students feel more successful and therefore motivated to engage in the activity. Keeping with the kinesthetic/ hands on theme, a puppet theater & puppets would be a great asset to my self contained behavioral program. My students have significant difficulty with perspective taking, taking personal responsibility and understanding how their actions impact others. Through puppetry, I would be able to " role play" social situations and/or difficult topics and give my students opportunities to better understand how actions have both positive and negative consequences in a less personal and threatening manner. I typically pick a theme for the month such as ,' Being a good friend' or 'Respect' and create lessons around a particular topic. Most of my students are poor readers but through puppetry, I can provide positive, and engaging opportunities.
