The books chosen will all become part of my classroom library. Students silent read daily, and the only homework required in my class is for students to read. The benefits of reading are not only personal to these kids, but will resonate for years to come in their families, their education and their contributions to society. Some of the titles chosen, such as Don´t Call Me Crazy: 33 Voices Start the Conversation About Mental Health by Kelly Jensen, will help students understand that they are not alone dealing with mental illness, even if they lack access to professional help or are fearful to talk to others about it. Other titles like Poetry X, will allow them to explore another world, when most of them won´t leave our state, and it will open their minds to a genre they might not have experienced otherwise. I have seen the books in my library change non-readers into readers. I have seen the books inspire students so much that they have reached out to me on social media to talk about their experience, they have stopped in the hall to chat about books and they have shared the books they have checked out from me with their parents, starting a whole dialogue that wouldn´t have existed. The benefits of a classroom library are seen daily and are tangible. I wish the funding would be available without having to reach out to others for help, but this is the reality of our public school. Please consider helping to change a life.
