When the content is engaging and relevant, it not only fosters student's attentiveness, but it supports their growth in reading comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking. Research supports that there is a strong correlation between student engagement (as measured through active participation, attentiveness to classroom activities, and completion of work) and academic success. The problem? Our classroom library is limited and most of the books we have studied have held little interest or relevance to my students. Hinton's novel, "The Outsiders" is a coming of age story of a young, teenage boy, who is struggling to find his own identity. Like many teenagers, he feels the opposing tensions that are tugging at him, causing him to have to decide what his morals are and what he believes. I believe this story will resonate with many of my students who will, if not already, find themselves beginning to have to make similar choices about the kind of person they will be and in what direction they will take their life.
