My project will help student with one of the biggest struggles of elementary school math: fractions. In primary grades students use hands-on tools to teach counting and adding, but sadly that hands-on exploration starts to dwindle as the students get older. Unfortunately, that is also when math gets more complicated. Having great conceptual understanding of fractions will help students have a strong fraction foundation.
Help my students gain a conceptual understanding of fractions through use of fraction tiles and blocks. These manipulatives will engage students and excite them for math learning. Students will be able to use fraction tiles to build and compare fractions. Unifix cubes can be used for creating equivalent fractions. These easy to use cubes can later be used in our geometry unit about perimeter and area. Translating their knowledge of fractions to number lines can be especially tricky. Write and Wipe number lines will forgive the mistakes of a new learner’s errors and allow them to make quick corrections. Students can also focus on the learning and not worry about making straight and equal sized number lines.
These engaging materials will be used during whole group instruction, math centers, in cooperative learning groups, and be available for individual students who need them to support their learning.
