I just recently finished taking a summer literacy institute course where I learned in depth theories and practices for improving literacy and reading in all students. The main take away I learned from the course was the need for a rich and abundant classroom library for the students. Surrounding students with rich and diverse literature opens up their world to so many possibilities, and instilling in them a love for reading will greatly benefit them in the long run. Books can provide mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors for students; mirrors that allow students to see themselves in books, windows to look into the lives of others, and sling glass doors to enter into other worlds. Students need books they can relate to, books they can learn from, and books that can inspire their creativity and imaginations. For young readers, it is also important to provide them with books containing repetition, that after being read aloud together, students can have the confidence to pick them up and read them on their own. I want my classroom to be a place where students can feel confident to pick up any book and start reading. I want my students to leave my classroom with a love of reading that will follow them wherever they go.
