Students today love to have hands-on activities that make abstract concepts a reality in their world. By using a microscope, I can show them the things that I am teaching. 6th graders lack the skills to operate and focus their own compound light microscope; however, with a digital microscope I can connect it to a projector and do all of the hard work of microscopy while my students enjoy the view! Instead of just telling them about microorganisms found in water, we can go take our own water sample and find life in the most unexpected of places (like that weird ditch by the soccer field!) Instead of just telling my students about how plants are made of cells, I can have them investigate the different types of tissues found in plants by studying the different types of cells. A microscope would truly allow me to take my lessons to the next level.
