My students are Transitional Kindergartners, a new grade level in the state of California. Transitional Kindergarten is an extra year of Kindergarten intended for our youngest Kindergartners (fall birthdays), students who have never attended pre-school or who just need one more year of school before entering the rather academic Kindergartens of today. My students are young, sweet and eager to learn! Their brains are like sponges! They absorb every new experience that they are exposed to. And they LOVE art time!!! They are 4-5 years old and unless they went to a good preschool or daycare program, may never have experienced any art activities. Our inner-city school's student population is 70% Latina and 30% African American. My students have many challenges including having been born with multiple drugs in their systems, homelessness, incarcerated parents, neglect and lack of exposure to verbal opportunities. Our school is a safe haven for them in our school community.
