These students love music, dance, and singing. Working together as a whole class to learn an instrument will encourage teamwork and creativity. Ukuleles are easy to handle and can be played with success in just a few sessions. Music provides joy, predictability, and instant success. Research shows that music can help children learn and use positive coping skills and express difficult feelings and emotions. When students play an instrument, they can express themselves without words. These students have had to deal with many changes and many types of stress in the last 6 weeks. Two have been evacuated and their schools are no longer able to serve them due to the Camp Fire. They are adapting quickly and making the most of their situations. My plan is to teach them to play throughout the year as a continual form of affiliation, joy, and therapy. These 4th graders will be singing along playing their new ukuleles in no time!
