Often, a child can have difficulty accessing their education through a typical classroom setting. Students with emotional, academic, and sensory needs will have access to a Sensory Space that provides them with equipment and tools that provide sensory input to promote calm bodies and teach self-regulation strategies; thus enabling students to return to their classroom "ready to learn". By providing this setting to students, we can enable them to access a school environment that is not always accessible and available. I firmly believe that children do well if they can; so I am requesting resources to build a sensory room that provides and addresses the unique learning styles of our children. Students will be able to receive sensory input that improves concentration and attention, thus allowing them to have increased success in the classroom. Students will have access to activities that address specific areas of sensory input to include vestibular input (movement) on the swings and spin disc to promote focus, attention span and eye contact; proprioceptive (deep pressure input) with the weighted blankets, crash pad, and trampoline to promote body awareness and calming; tactile activities such as kinetic sand to promote calming and self regulation tools and strategies. We believe this space will positively impact the entire school community by providing opportunities to prepare for the demands of the school day. It will teach students self-regulation and time management strategies to reduce classroom disruptions and help everyone to be successful.
