The PUSD post-secondary program focuses on teaching adaptive daily living skills and vocational skills. By using a common kitchen appliance, the Keurig machine, the student can learn an assortment of essential life skills. Taking an order requires listening and writing skills. Using a pictured job sequence card and pre-measured ingredients, the students can learn to make an individual cup of coffee. In addition, counting money and making change reinforce basic money management skills. Finally, this vocational endeavor provides the additional benefit of increased opportunities for socialization and allows the students to feel a sense of accomplishment and the importance of contribution. Ultimately, the skills learned through this vocational concept may lead to increased opportunities for integrated employment.
