The use of robots in the classroom is an innovative way to ensure kids are communicating, problem-solving, and collaborating. Sphero robots can be integrated into all subject areas. Students will learn computational thinking and act like engineers, solving real-world problems. Activities could include replicating the solar system, programming characters in a story, building and navigating across a bridge, or painting geometric shapes with the robot. Imagine the excitement of covering a robot in paint and bringing geometry to life. Our middle school robotics class will help teach students about computational thinking and block-based coding. I think teaching others will help our middle school students develop leadership skills as well as enhance personal knowledge. According to Code.org, 58% of all new STEM jobs are in computing, yet only 10% of STEM graduates are in computer science. My hope is to get our students excited about learning and hopefully pique interest in computer science.
