WHY HEAVY WORK? Having a classroom of students at different levels of alertness can be a particular challenge to teachers. Some students are under aroused; looking sleepy, appearing uninterested and yawning. Others are over aroused, ready to run a marathon, but not ready to sit, listen or write. There is one sure fire activity to address the needs of all these students. It is known as HEAVY WORK (proprioceptive input). When children engage in focused heavy work activities, they arrive at a “just right” state. Proprioception is a form of input to the muscles and joints which makes us aware of our position in space/where we are in relation to other objects/people. Kids who have difficulty interpreting proprioceptive input have trouble grading/planning their movements and regulating their level of arousal. You may have a child who accidentally breaks things, appears clumsy or uncoordinated, they may be seeking out ways to calm and organize their nervous system. They may seem disruptive, full of excessive energy or even unsafe. These are the kids who will benefit from HEAVY WORK activities. And for the sleepy, under aroused student HEAVY WORK can be a wakeup call to their nervous system. Be alert, wake up, we need to get going and focus! When in doubt, provide HEAVY WORK activities for your class!
