There are many students in my classroom that have a bad case of the wiggles. Dun dun dun! It’s not their fault! They are kids, and honestly I don’t know many adults that could sit in a traditional classroom without getting the wiggles. Wiggles are normal! We just need a way to get them out while learning. I started the year providing flexible seating to combat this problem. We have ball chairs, small chair rockers, cushions, and a few stools in addition to our regular chairs. They love them! We use them throughout the day as our smart spots. During individual or partner work they find a spot they feel would help them focus in. It is not uncommon to walk in my classroom to find students throughout the room in various seats, and they are completely engaged! Can I get a hallelujah? The only downside is that we don’t have enough seating available for the other times. It’s when students are at desks or instruction that they start breaking out in those dreaded wiggles. We’ve had many class discussions on what we feel would be help us with this issue. The consensus is that we need more available work area with flexible seating. In comes my crazy plan. I’d like to do a classroom mini makeover to create areas with enough flexible seating for every child to feel comfortable throughout the entire day. I’ve requested wobble chairs, bouncy desk bands, and wobble cushions. Each of these will make a huge impact on our classroom. I don’t want students to just feel comfortable during independent time, but all the time! The kids know what they need, and research backs what they need. Please help us put those wiggles to good use!
