As I mentioned in an earlier section of this proposal, my students are brilliant and beautiful. Yet for years, these special needs middle school students have been underestimated because of their behaviors and their challenges. I believe in my students, and in my practice, I believe boldly that students will rise to the level you set for them in terms of expectations. I believe that my students can rise above their exceptionalities if they have folks that believe in them and put together learning experiences that are enriching, engaging, and designed to help them grow and enjoy learning. The novel class sets such as "Number the Stars", "The Giver", and "Wonder" are contemporary classics that many of the general ed classes read. I want to provide my students with all the same experiences as every other child in the school, presented in a way that they can succeed with them. These books are a big step toward reaching the goal of normalcy for these special young people.
