We will be using these books in reader's workshop as part of our historical fiction unit. As our mentor text, we read this book as a class. As we read together, we also deeply analyze the themes, characters, and other narrative features. In the practice of shared reading, there is significant evidence that shows students develop vocabulary skills, strengthens comprehension, and models fluency. This text is slightly above level for my 4th graders, so, as we read together, they have the opportunity to strengthen their own reading skills in the process. "Number the Stars" is an incredible book about the triumph of good over evil, the value of friendship, and the power that children have to make change, no matter their age. Please consider support our 4th graders as they read about the horrors of Nazi occupation, the strength of the people of Denmark, and the power of empathy and kindness.
