My students love learning about mindfulness and strategies to use to help us regulate our emotions. Every morning we start out with a mindful activity to get our bodies and minds ready for learning. I would love for my students to explore other outlets for relaxation, one being weaving!
Each child would receive a loom and be able to use this as a tool throughout the year to relax and calm down when they are feeling those big emotions. This hands -on activity will not only help those little minds, but those little hands and bodies, as well with fine motor skills and tactile learning. My students crave movement and since our classroom is open to other classrooms, we need to find quiet activities to get our wiggles out without causing distractions.
My first graders are learning how to self-regulate their emotions and notice when they need space from one another. Since our classroom is small and open to other classrooms, the clipboards would help give students an opportunity to independently move to a new quiet space within our room when they feel the need to.
Being self-aware of our emotions and our behavior is a very important skill to learn and will only create a more positive learning environment for all!
