This week I received a new textbook to peruse through and I found myself thinking, "My students don't need a textbook, they need books. Books they can read. Books they want to read. Books they will finish." We all remember the first book that changed reading for us. For me, it didn't happen until college. For some of my friends, it didn't happen until they became adults and finally realized they could choose what they wanted to read. For some of my students, it happened in elementary or middle school. Still, some of my readers haven't found the book to shift their perception of reading. When you step into my classroom, you begin to realize that students get a choice from day one. This helps them all find that book that changes reading for them. It is my goal to have every student leave my room with the tools to find books that they can read. Books they want to read. Books they will finish.
