My students are great young people, extraordinary learners and eager to find out about the larger world around them. Unfortunately this area of our state is financially depressed and many of their families simply cannot afford some of the educational privileges that many of us wouldn't think twice about providing. This trip is not something they would ordinarily get to participate in and I so very much want them to experience this real-world learning opportunity at the age where it can make the most lasting impression! In addition to the actual experience of touring a world-class museum and learning first-hand about what they've only read about, they will be required to create an essay, using their computers, to describe what they have seen and learned and how it applies to their current lessons in Science. My hope is that this will spur them in later grades to make use of less traditional methods of learning, such as virtual tours and individual empirical observation.
