We are requesting swim goggles to support my students' learning in the water, to increase their confidence and to keep their eyes safe! In the past my school has provided funding for our goggles. However, due to budget cuts and funds being prioritized elsewhere we are not being helped at this moment. Besides swimsuits and towels, goggles are the most critical piece of equipment for anyone who wants to learn how to swim. Moreover, because of the chlorine in the water it is imperative we provide students with goggles to keep their eyes safe. Every skill students learn in swim class, from the most basic like blowing bubbles to the more advance swimming strokes like the Butterfly, goggles are necessary. Students first learn basic aquatic skills such as blowing bubbles, bobbing, floating, gliding and treading water. Students need goggles in order to be successful with these skills- all of which contribute to increasing their confidence and decreasing their fear of the water. Once these aquatic skills are mastered we then introduce swimming strokes such as the front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke (just to name a few) and then real magic begins! Please help my students continue to grow and develop into physically literate learners. Swimming is a lifetime skill and teaching them to overcome their fears now at a young age will be vital to their success as they continue to grow and mature. After all, what child doesn't want to be able to go into a pool on summer vacation, or to a water park, or to a lake or the beach..that answer is only children who don't know how to swim and who are scared to be around water (we see this with adults all the time who never learned how!).
