In today's fast-paced society, it is crucial that we as teachers find a way to balance academics with social-emotional learning. After participating in the Breathe for Change (B4C) 2 Day training in December 2018, I expanded my curriculum to include social-emotional learning (SEL*f) lessons by incorporating yoga and mindfulness into our daily routines. The SEL*f curriculum includes powerful social-emotional learning strategies and tools that teachers and students can use together in the classroom. “These strategies empower teachers to show up as their best selves, and help students focus their minds, connect with their bodies, regulate their emotions, express their creativity, form meaningful connections, and experience a deep sense of calm and relaxation.” (B4C manual) The children absolutely loved the variety of practices that helped them discover themselves and learn about their classmates and teachers. The two areas of growth melded together to form the most amazing classroom community! This summer, I will complete the 200 Hour Breathe for Change training and I am looking to expand my lessons even further within the classroom. Individual yoga mats and blocks will help the children define where their personal space is so that they can focus and center themselves at various points throughout the day. They will have a defined space to explore physical movement and a space to utilize when they need a moment to self-regulate and re-focus their minds. "When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it is our job to share our calm, not join their chaos".
